Lieutenant George Bass was 27 years old in 1797 when he undertook an epic voyage in an open whaleboat which was only about 9 metres in length. He and his crew of six sailors planned to be away exploring for six weeks, which would have been quite a feat in itself, but instead they took twelve weeks to complete the journey. They mapped the coast, discovered that Tasmania wasn't joined to the mainland, drew a wombat and other animals and birds which hadn't been seen by white people before, saw Wilsons Promontory and called it 'the cornerstone of a great island'. George Bass disappeared over 200 years ago, but he has turned up again in Prom Country. See him at "Starscapes and Visions" in the Foster Hall (FWMAC) on Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd. Tickets are selling fast. Don't miss out.
