‘Antiques & Collectables’ – ask the expert!

It is time to dust off grandmother’s china, polish up that old chair, bring out your special collection or perhaps shine the silver….you never know just how valuable something is!

However you will have the opportunity to find out at the Prom Coast Seachange Festival’s ‘Antiques & Collectables Fair’.

On Sunday 10th April from 10.00am to 4.00pm at the Foster Community House (Old Court House), Station Street, Foster, valuations expert, David Freeman, will be on hand to give an evaluation on your paintings, fine china, collections and any kind of ‘treasure’ you are curious about.

While there are no guarantees that you are sitting on a fortune, there is a certain exciting anticipation in just wondering ‘what if’!

There is a small cost of $5 per item, or $20 for 5 items, for items to be valued, with proceeds going to Foster Hospital.

You are invited to come along, even if you aren’t getting anything valued, to hear and see what is considered valuable by the expert.  There will also be a variety of interesting stalls to peruse while you are waiting.  For further information on the Fair phone 03 56 832474.

This is all part of the fantastic range of events and activities over the Prom Coast Seachange Festival weekend.   For a full program, bookings and all details visit

"Hypothetical"

One of the Festival's most popular events in 2009, the Hypothetical, looks set to repeat its standing room only success this year on Sunday, April 10th.

This year's host will be former County Court judge, Michael Strong, who has been a regular "weekender" at Foster and the Prom Coast for the past decade.

The six panellists include a senior student from the South Gippsland Secondary College, a local retailer and a member of the local Council.

This year's event will be held at the Community Health Centre at 3.00 p.m., as there will be more seats available there.  However, to be certain, organisers Nan Mackay and Jo MacKenzie recommend booking early at Revelations in Foster's main street.

"Many people missed out last time, and we don't want that to happen again", they say.  They will not disclose the topic to be discussed at the Hypothetical, but say it is contentious, and close to many people's hearts and minds.

Bookings at Revelations, enquiries to Jo MacKenzie on 56 82 l673.

'Windows on Foster' sculpture event

The Prom Coast region's sculpturing talent will be on show in the 'Windows on Foster Sculpture Event' during the Prom Coast Seachange Festival.

This new festival event invites artists to submit original, small, easily portable sculptures to be displayed in, or adjacent to, the windows of shops in Foster.  To add even further incentive, the two sculptures considered the most outstanding by the event's judge, well know local artist and sculptor Mark Rayment, will each receive a prize.

The event is open to all local artists, who are also asked to supply a plinth or display box for their work. There is a $10 entry fee for all entries, with a limit of two entries per person.

The sculptures will be placed in the shop windows in the week leading up to the Festival opening, Friday evening April 8.  Winners of the event will be announced in conjunction with the official opening of the Great Southern Portrait Prize, at 2.30 p.m. on Sunday April 10.

Entries are now being accepted, and must be received by Mandy Gunn 746 Walkerville Road, Tarwin Lower.

Don't miss the fantastic Shane Howard gig at the Foster War Memorial Hall on Saturday April 9!

Don't miss the fantastic Shane Howard gig at the Foster War Memorial Hall on Saturday April 10!

Planning for the 2011 Prom Coast Seachange Festival is now in full swing, with the initial program now in place - but with still more room for new activities if community organisations wish to submit ideas.

Festival Chair, Joan Liley said the 2011 program includes a number of events which featured in the 2009 Festival, as well as some terrific new and inspired activities and exhibitions.

"The extremely popular 'hypothetical' and the 'street' lunch, featuring local produce will again be features, as will our expanded 'living books' and diverse art exhibition events, including the Great Southern Portrait Prize.

One exciting new event in the 2011 Festival is an antique 'collectables' roadshow, where you will be able to have your antiques appraised.  We anticipate this will be very popular, so it will be essential to pre-book individual appraisal times.

Other new events include bush cooking, a bike ride from Fish Creek to Foster, and a Prom Walk.  We also have a unique sculpture event, which we hope will involve many creative people exhibiting their 'themed' works in local business shop windows,"  Joan said.

"Iconic Australian rock legend, and former Goanna band lead singer, Shane Howard and his band, will headline a cabaret on the Saturday night at Foster Memorial Hall, adding to a fantastic range of live music happening over the three days at various locations throughout the district.

After the official opening on Friday night, April 8th, FAMDA will perform a special show in the War Memorial Hall - which we anticipate will draw an enormous crowd.

The aim of the Festival is to showcase the region in every sense.  From the physical beauty of our national parks and bushland, through to the creative talents of our eclectic mix of local residents.  Art, music, food, wine, theatre, walking, talking and of course just having fun are the features of the 2011 Festival."

She added that the Festival is supported by a number of organisations including the Bendigo Bank - in particular the Toora and Foster Community Bank Branches, and the Committee was extremely grateful for any financial support given, and would welcome more new partners for 2011.

"The Festival is an opportunity for small and large businesses to partner with a truly local, but very professional Festival. The Festival will be promoted state-wide and we anticipate it will once again attract many visitors over the three days - which is good for the local economy."

Individuals and organisations are invited to contact Joan Liley or any of the Prom Coast Seachange Festival Committee with ideas for events to be included in the Festival Program.  The Committee is happy to promote events under the Festival banner.
